My Story
For 30 years I’ve wanted to write children’s books – stories based on my first-hand experience of growing up as the sibling of a mentally ill older brother.
This is the beginning of a series of semi-autobiographical stories relating some of the struggles children may face and how the tone of one’s life does not have to be set by complex family dynamics.
The stories are told using animal characters who are brought to life with charming, vivid illustrations.
Through my stories, I want others in similar situations to know that they are not alone, that it is possible to find resilience and strength within themselves.

Growing up aspiring to become an actor or dancer, I knew working hard to achieve my highest potential was critical. Having attained some success in the world of dancing and acting, in several companies, on off-Broadway and commercials, I transitioned into broadening that commitment to working in a profession where I could drive change that would enable everyone to reach their potential. And so, the door to becoming a Nonprofit Development / Corporate Social Responsibility Executive opened for me.
For the past 25+ years, I have forged strong personal and corporate partnerships and seized upon opportunities. I have helped leading global organizations such as the American Red Cross, the YMCA, the American Lung Association, the Arthritis Foundation, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and Columbia Law School attain and usually surpass their fundraising targets.
Again, I am shifting gears and setting my personal goals toward change in our community. As the sibling of an older brother with mental illness, I’m hoping to create more awareness for families and young kids on finding resilience and strength in adjusting to difficult situations both in the home and at school. I’m looking to work with nonprofits, schools, and other organizations on learning about mental health and awareness for children. My goal is to help bring to light not only the issue of mental illness but constructive ways to deal with moving forward as a family and as an individual.

“Kloe’s New Start by K.M. Selvidge is a children’s story about Kloe the cat. Kloe is about to start a new school, and she’s excited beyond belief. Even more so when her best friends Terry Turkey and Ginger Goat talk her into trying out for the cheerleading squad and she makes the grade. But her brother Wreny gets into a fight and is sent home on the first day, and then flies into a rage for no reason with her. The next day, word has gone around that she is Wreny’s sister and people turn their backs on her. Can she show them that she’s more than that? That she’s her own person? Or will she always be treated as an outcast and seen as a troublemaker? And what’s really wrong with Wreny?
Kloe’s New Start by K.M. Selvidge is a fun story with plenty of amazing illustrations by Kateryna Meleschuk. All the characters are animals, and this heartwarming tale is more than just a story. It teaches kids about making friends and joining in, especially at a new school. It covers subjects like mental health, learning to be your own person, and not allowing others to label you or treat you in a certain way because of something someone else has done. The characters are wonderful, well-developed with their own personalities and the illustrations help bring this story to life. The struggles the characters go through are very real, and this book will teach kids a lot of new coping skills. This is perfect for young children and adults alike; these struggles aren’t just for kids as the same things happen all through adult life, too.“Reviewed by Anne-Marie Reynolds for Readers’ Favorite

K. M. Selvidge’s Kloe’s New Start is a heartwarming tale of resilience, individuality, and determination. It follows Kloe, a young cat brimming with excitement for her first day at a new school. With dreams of making friends and trying out for the cheerleading team, Kloe’s journey begins on a hopeful note. However, her enthusiasm is soon tested when her mischievous brother Wreny stirs up trouble, pulling her into his whirlwind of chaos. As Kloe navigates these challenges, readers are drawn into a captivating story of a girl fighting to carve her own path against the odds.
Kloe’s character is endearing and relatable. Her sweetness and determination shine as she strives to follow her dreams, even while grappling with her brother’s disruptive antics and the disheartening favoritism of her parents. The emotional depth of her struggle resonates, making it impossible not to root for her success. Equally inspiring are her loyal friends, who encourage her to persevere despite the negativity around her. The gallant “Sir Petey” is particularly memorable, adding a touch of humor and charm to the narrative.
At its core, the story champions the importance of staying true to oneself, no matter how daunting the obstacles. The book is brought to life with vibrant illustrations by Kateryna Meleshchuk. Every page is adorned with artwork that complements the story’s warmth and energy, enhancing the reader’s immersion in Kloe’s world. The narrative builds to a satisfying conclusion, leaving readers inspired as Kloe takes steps toward a brighter future.
If there’s one critique, it’s that the book feels too short. The world of Kloe and her adventures is rich with potential, and it’s easy to imagine her story expanding into a full-length novel. This snapshot, however, is a delightful introduction to her universe and a testament to the empowering message of pursuing one’s dreams.
Perfect for readers aged 7 and up, Kloe’s New Start is a deeply personal and uplifting story. It celebrates overcoming challenges and staying true to oneself, making it a perfect choice for anyone who loves positive, character-driven tales. This brief but impactful journey through Kloe’s world leaves readers longing for more adventures with her and her friends, promising a wealth of future stories to come.

🏫
Kloe’s New Start by K.M. Selvidge is an engaging and heartwarming story that teaches kids about the importance of being true to yourself instead of being defined by a siblings’ behavior and reputation. It covers subjects like learning to make new friends, fitting in, and developing the confidence to try something new. The charming and detailed illustrations by Kateryna Meleshchuk enhance the story.
🎒
This chapter book is perfect for children aged 7 – 13, especially when they may be feeling anxiety when starting something new. I think this book can lead to a great discussion about what they can do if they have similar feelings. What is the best way to be supportive of a sibling who is acting out? This copy will be available in my LFL for one lucky reader!
😻
I love that the three main characters, Wreny, Kloe, and Petey, are inspired by the author’s real cats!Summary:
Kloe can’t wait to get started at her new school… but when her brother Wreny starts acting out, will she end up stuck in his shadow? Or will she be able to make her own way and make others see her for who she truly is?
❓️Do you have siblings? Did you have any issues going to school together? I’m an only child, so I didn’t have that experience.

MY REVIEW:
I love the cover of this book that have cats but there like human caps and also all time is one of my favorite seasons. This is the story of a human like cat named Khloe, who is super excited to start her first day of junior high school. Wreny, is her brother and she has been held back a year as he acted out a lot during the previous year and now both brother and sister are going to school at the same time and the same school. There is some bullying mentioned between Wreny and the school quarterback named Brownie. We loved the illustrations of all the students and the animals in this book there are very human like and also wearing clothing which was interesting. I love how the book has a message that anyone can be friends with anyone else and even Khloe was trying out for being a cheerleader, and Brownie takes notice of her due to tryouts. Her brother is going through teenage angst during the book however Khloe is doing quite well in school and becoming more and more popular among the students and the teachers.
I loved how the author incorporated several messages into this book about doing your best, being yourself, not letting others get you down, and more.
This is an excellent read and I highly recommend this one to kids in the junior high school years as this may help some during school time.
